CLE Writing Workshops

The Center for Language Education (CLE) is proud to host the Writing Center, aimed at assisting both students and staff with their writing skills. Based on previous writing tutoring sessions with students, we have identified a few writing tutoring sessions with students, we have identified a few writing skills that most students are interested in. This semester we’ve planned four workshops for staff and students of all grades. The schedule , topic and descriptions of these workshops for staff and students of all grades. The schedule , topic and descriptions of these workshops are as follows.

 


Workshop Descriptions

 

I. Practical Email Writing by Matthew Jellick

This workshop will teach students general formats of writing English emails. The instructor will provide and analyze with student sample emails for requesting, apologizing and assignment related topics, namely attachment submissions, inquiries about assignments, asking for extensions, etc.

II. Coherence between Sentences by Zirui Liu

This workshop aims to help you write clear and persuasive argumentation. With introduction to the differences between discourse in Chinese and English writing (see picture below), we will examine sample paragraphs to learn how coherences between sentences make explanation clear and straightforward. Practicing techniques of writing with coherence in turn guides your reasoning.

III. Persuasion: Increasing Your Personal Power through Writing by Brian Bultler

Join us to learn about putting power in your writing!  Your ideas are important and valuable, and the world needs them. In this workshop you will learn and practice strategies of persuasion, helping your readers to believe in your ideas while increasing your personal power in this world of competitive ideas.

 

IV. Revamping Your Résumé (or CV) by Natalie Ferguson

This workshop will teach students the Do’s and Dont’s of résumé/CV writing. We’ll look at examples, analyze proper formatting, write eye-catching bullet points, and identify transferable skills. Don’t forget to bring a printed copy of your résumé!
