The first of two CLE Writing Workshops featured Beatrice Clegg presenting on "Decoding Latin Terms in Research Writing". Throughout her workshop, she not only provided examples, but more importantly, the meaning, history and proper usage of Latin as it applies to research writing.
The history of Latin within the English language is complex, and even in modern writing, it can be argued that nearly 50% of our vernacular comes from Latin. Underscoring this importance, Beatrice showcased Latin terms in common usage and how to properly use them, including italics, placement of periods, and the difference between one (i.e.) or the other (e.g.).
The Writing Center helps both students and staff across the SUSTech campus with assistance, and will continue with another Workshop next week on "Practical Email Writing".
