Promising Outcomes Yielded in 2023 “FLTRP · ETIC Cup” “Understanding Contemporary China” Provincial Semifinals

The Provincial-Level Semifinals of 2023 National “FLTRP · ETIC Cup” “Understanding Contemporary China” English Writing, Reading, and Translation Contests were held online on October 28th. The Interpretation and Public Speaking Contests took place in Beijing Normal University-Hong Kong Baptist University United International College (UIC), Zhuhai, on November 4th. This year, over 90,000 college students from 69 universities in Guangdong province participated in the preliminary contests and nearly 900 contestants advanced to the provincial-level semifinals. A total of 13 students represented SUSTech participated in the provincial-level semifinals. The collaborative efforts of the contestants and the CLE instructors have led to successful outcomes.

 

All SUSTech reading contestants won awards including one gold award, two silver awards, and one bronze award. In the writing contest, all the contestants were awarded, with one silver award and three bronze awards. Additionally, both the two translation contestants received recognition, one with a silver award and the other with a bronze award. Out of the two interpretation contestants, one was honored with a silver award. Lastly, one speaking contestant participated and won a bronze award.

 

The SUSTech contestants for the reading contest have achieved unprecedented results, including one gold award (LI Yexin), two silver awards (WU Tong and YANG Zongqi), and one bronze award (XU Caiyue). The gold award winner, LI Yexin, has advanced to the national final representing SUSTech and will compete later this month under the supervision of CLE teachers. We wish her the best of luck and look forward to seeing further achievements from SUSTech students in English reading.

 

Four SUSTech undergraduates took part in the writing contests. They composed one expository essay and one argumentative essay within two hours. HAN Ziyu finally won silver prize. LI Yexin, GU Yu, and LAI Yingan won bronze prizes. To prepare participant students for the writing contest, CLE provided a series of writing workshops targeting specific writing skills in the contest.

Two SUSTech contestants took part in the online semifinal translation contests. GE Xinrui won the silver award, and FAN Xinqi won the bronze award.

With regard to the speaking contest, HUANG Shuyan represented SUSTech participated in the speaking semifinal and won a bronze award. During the past five months, the speaking contest preparation team consisting of six CLE instructors has provided intensive training focused on both impromptu speaking and prepared speeches.

Since May 2023, the CLE has organized the English Preliminary Contests on campus and offered our students full support. Fourteen CLE instructors formed three contest preparation teams to organize three contests respectively and coach the contestants for the provincial-level semifinals. The FLTRP English contests have been attended by SUSTech students for the fourth consecutive time, and it has been a great learning opportunity for all contestants. The CLE is highly proud of the contestants’ achievements and is committed to supporting our students in future contests.
