The Center for Language Education successfully held its 5th annual conference on Oct 29th, 2022. The conference highlighted shared experiences of teaching and learning in an English context at SUSTech. The theme for this year’s conference was “Emerging Trends in Language Teaching and Learning: Explore, Enhance, and Excel” After the successful completion of four CLE conferences in past years, with wider acceptance and recognition, the 5th conference received more attention. 23 presentations were delivered on the day. Presenters, including both faculty members at the SUSTech and Scholars from Chongqing University, Shenzhen University, Shenzhen Technology University, Peking University Shenzhen Campus, HIT Shenzhen, and Shantou University, shared and offered their opinions and experiences on teaching and learning.
The 5th CLE Conference on Teaching and Learning
Prof GU Xiangdong, one of the leading experts in the field of English Language Assessment from the Department of Foreign Languages, at Chongqing University, delivered the conference keynote speech this year. Xiangdong’s research interests integrate issues in language teaching, learning, teacher development, and assessment. She has led dozens of granted research projects, published numerous journal articles and books, and delivered over 200 keynote speeches, seminars, and presentations nationally and internationally.

After the tea break of the morning session, Prof REN Huan from the School of Medicine, SUSTech gave a speech on Exploring Medical English: Mutual Engagement of Professional Intension and Language Skills in Medical English Curriculum Design; Prof AJ Bates from the department of English, Peking University Shenzhen Campus talked about the academic writing. Dr. Adrian Rowland’s topic is Bringing the Scientific Literature into Your Classroom; Dr. Zeng Simin from HIT Shenzhen gave a talk on Applying Group Dynamic Assessment in University-Level English Listening and Speaking Class; Dr. Zhang Danyang from Shenzhen University talked about Exploring the Ideological and Political Education Innovation Model of English Education Majors with the Assistance of Information Technology; Dr. Li Xinxin from Department of Ocean Science and Engineering gave a talk on Application of Modern Multimedia Technologies and Chinese Traditional Poems in Introduction to the Marine Ecosystem. the featured presenters shared their discoveries and experiences, which consolidated our belief in teaching and learning. Though not only English but also other subjects had been discussed. In the afternoon session, 16 presenters talked about various topics related to Teaching and Learning.

The conference demonstrates the CLE’s commitment to teaching excellence together with SUSTech community members. It also demonstrates the focus of our education is on empowering students with knowledge and skills. Dr. Yuan Li, Director of the CLE, believes that learning in universities is the construction of meaning through language as a system and its use. The quality of meaning and learning achieved is dependent on the extent and quality of exchange between teachers and students. Therefore, we will never stop its development of a promising and excellent language center with a global vision in China.
