On September 26, over 30 international faculty and students at the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) joined a special Mid-Autumn event. Co-hosted by the Center for Language Education (CLE), SUSTech Language Committee, and SUSTech Global. The 2025 Themed Event for the Mid-Autumn Festival- “Make Cloisonné and Learn Chinese” linked traditional craftsmanship with Mandarin study.

In her opening remarks, Dr. Hu Yuxiu, Director of the CLE, mentioned the significance of the Mid-Autumn Festival as one of the most important festivals in China. " We aim to help our international friends grasp related words in a vivid context and enjoy Chinese craftsmanship," she explained.

Dr. Zhu Wenhui introduced the Mid-Autumn festival culture, focusing on "tuányuán" (reunion), the festival’s origins, customs, and key terms like " yuèbǐng" (mooncake) and " Zhōngqiū Jié" (Mid-Autumn Festival). Dr. Shen Wei then explained cloisonné, its history, techniques, and related professional terms—to prepare participants for the hands-on part.

The highlight was the group workshop, where attendees made Mid-Autumn-themed tea trays. With the instructors’ guidance, they used wooden bases, thin copper wires, and colored glazes to create their works. During the process, they talked about crafting steps using new Mandarin phrases, making language practice fun.

This event promotes cross-cultural interactions. The CLE will hold more such programs to engage international faculty and students with Chinese culture and improve their Mandarin.

By combining traditional craft and language education, SUSTech’s Mid-Autumn event celebrated the festival and strengthened the bonds with the international communities.
