Vocabulary Power Challenge



Vocabulary skill is crucial to your academic success. Studies showed that in an English-mediated campus it is very important for students to master English words proficiently to pass academic examinations and achieve academic success. To promote the attention of SUSTech students to English vocabulary, to improve students’ interest in English learning, and to create a good English atmosphere on campus, the Center for Language Education (CLE) prepare a vocabulary bank for students to study vocabulary and is planning to hold an English Vocabulary Power Challenge. Below is a link for you to download the vocabulary bank. The vocabulary challenge is a university-wide vocabulary competition for all registered SUSTech students which will be held in late May 2020. Undergraduates and graduate students can sign up separately.


This vocabulary challenge is not just a competition; it is also a useful preparation for standardized English language tests such as TOEFL, IELTS, GRE test. When you leave the competition room, you will be more skillful in vocabulary skill than you walk in the room. This vocabulary challenge is also fun.


There are 4 parts in the vocabulary power challenge:

Part 1: Choose the closest definition of a word (30 questions)

Part 2: Know the roots, know the words (15 questions)

Part 3: Pick a word to make a sentence complete (15 questions)

Part 4: Interdisciplinary spelling puzzles (crosswords with 10 words)
