2023 SUSTech English Contests & "FLTRP · ETIC Cup” “Understanding Contemporary China”English Preliminary English Contests

In the Spring 2023 semester, the Center for Language Education (CLE) hosted university-wide contests in English reading, speaking, and writing. Additionally, the translation and interpreting contests were held in September 2023. These contests served as the preliminary rounds for the 2023 "FLTRP · ETIC Cup" under the theme of "Understanding Contemporary China."

 

Reading Contest

The SUSTech English Reading Contest & "FLTRP · ETIC Cup" preliminary contest was held on Saturday, April 22nd on campus. 66 SUSTech undergraduate and postgraduate students participated in the competition.                                                

The 110 minutes contest was a comprehensive examination on contestants’ reading broadness and skills, including logical thinking and reasoning, reading for understanding, information processing and judgment. SUSTech students demonstrated strong English reading ability in this challenging contest. Among dozens of excellent “readers”, 28 students won the contest. They are: grand prize winner (XU Caiyue); first prize winners (WU Tong, LI Yexin, YANG Zongqi, XIAO Qiwen, CHEN Sitong, and LIU Huiru); second prize winners (ZHOU Xiaoyu, TAN Yixin, TANG Zekun, GU Yu, ZHANG Jiahao, XIE Zhuoliang, HUANG Guanchao, WU Weiran, GONG Xi, ZHANG Min); third prize winners (WANG Zihan, WANG Xuling, HOU Qingyun, ZHOU Zhiyue, TAN Jing, WU Ruiping, LI Jiashu, PEI Hongjing, LIU Zhouyang, XU Xiaoye, TANG Shiqi).

 

 

Reading contest


Speaking Contest

On Saturday, May 13th, SUSTech students participated in a spirited speaking contest held on campus. This event, organized by CLE, was also the preliminary round of the national competition sponsored by FLTRP.

 

A total of twenty-three students competed, with ten emerging as winners. All contestants delivered compelling speeches on the given topic about AI. The grand prize was awarded to HUANG Shuyan, and the first prizes were secured by XIE Jingtao and ZHANG Zixuan. HUANG Shuyan and XIE Jingtao will represent SUSTech students in the provincial level contest scheduled for November. LIU Xiyuan, CHEN Wenjin, and LIU Xiaolin received second prizes and our third prize winners were LI Yuanshuo, JIANG Huaide, XIU Zhaoyu, WANG Moda, and ZHONG Yuhuan.

Writing Contest

FLTRP Preliminary Writing Contest was held on Sunday, May 14th in Teaching Building 1 at SUSTech. The writing contest aims to select excellent writers for the further provincial and national writing contest sponsored by FLTRP.

 

Writing contest committee chose the genre of argumentative essay as the writing task for the participant students. All participants completed the essay within 90 minutes, and their writings were collected by CLE 2023 Writing Contest Committee for cross-grading. Nine students won the FLTRP Writing Contest. They are one grand prize winner (GU yu), one first prize winner (LI Yexin), three second prize winners (HAN Ziyu, ZHANG zixin, LAI ying’an), and four third prize winners (ZHANG Zixuan, CHEN Wenjin, LIN Yangfan, CHEN Qianhui). Further workshops for the provincial contest are scheduled in the Fall semester.             

 

Writing contest

 

Translation and Interpreting contests

On Saturday, 23rd September, 2023, “FLTRP ETIC·Cup” “Understanding Contemporary China” translation and interpreting preliminary contests were held on campus. A total of 100 undergraduate and postgraduate students from more than 20 majors participated in the preliminary contests.

 

The computer-based interpreting contest examined Chinese-English consecutive interpreting. The 120 minutes online translation contest tested Chinese-English term translation and text translation.

 

Ten contestants won the interpreting contest. The grand prize is awarded to ZENG Yitao. The first prize winners are WANG Zhiyuan and XU Ningcong. The second prize winners are SHEN Xingcheng, WEN Aoxuan and LI Zhuoxuan. The third prize winners are CHEN Sitong, LI Yunhui, LIU Xiaoqun and TAN Lidan.

 


Twenty-five contestants won the translation contest. They are one grand prize winner (GE Xinrui), four first prize winners (FAN Xinqi, XIE Wei, LI Zekai and HU Shuai), eight second prize winners (LIU Zhouyang, SHI Xiangtao, ZHOU Zihao, Wu Zhuocheng, MENG Hanyi, ZHU Jiaxin, HUANG Shuyan and LIU Ying), and twelve third prize winners (GONG Qinruoxuan, LI Fulin, CHEN Zhiqian, CAO Jiarui, JIN Haoxiang, HAO Mengdi, YIN Wentao, SU Hengwei, LAI Ying’an, ZHANG Yuxiao, WANG Zhongxuan and LI Yixuan).

Workshops will be organized to offer training in reading, speaking, writing, translation, and interpreting to equip the preliminary winners for the provincial competitions scheduled for November 2023.
